Johnny Depp the very talented Academy Award-nominated actor, best known for his odd and eccentric roles including Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, and the quirky characters in Tim Burton films, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands.

John Christopher Depp II was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, on the 9 June 1963 and has German, Cherokee and Irish ancestry. His mother Betty Sue was a waitress and his father John Christopher Depp Sr an engineer. His family, including brother Danny and sisters Christie and Debbie, travelled around before eventually settling in Florida, when he was 7 years old.

When Depp was 15 his parents divorced, causing him emotional stress and insecurity. He started playing guitar as a way of dealing with his problems and fronted various garage bands. He dropped out of high school to become a rock musician and with his band The Kids, set out together for Los Angeles in pursuit of a record deal. They had some success, including opening for Iggy Pop, but friction between the band members caused the group to split before they were able to sign a deal.

Depp married makeup artist Lori Anne Allison in 1983. She introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage, who advised Depp to pursue an acting career. He took his advice and soon found himself in a major film, Nightmare On Elm Street.

His marriage to Lori Anne Allison ended in divorce in 1985 and he has never remarried. He went on to date Sherilyn Fenn, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Grey, and Kate Moss before settling down with Vanessa Paradis in 1998. The couple have two children, daughter Lily-Rose Melody Depp, born on 27 May 27 1999 and son John "Jack" Christopher Depp III, born on 9 April 2002.
